American

Robin Jones is a longtime visual artist based in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and a dedicated member of the Artists Association of Nantucket. Early in her career on the island, Jones was an active member of the Nantucket Printmakers, a collaborative group of local artists founded in 1969 by Janet Ball McGlinn and Schuyler Bradt. Working alongside other island creatives, she honed her skills in printmaking and exhibited her work locally.

Technique and Subjects Jones is highly regarded for her work across multiple mediums, most notably pastels and printmaking:

  • Coastal Pastels: Jones has produced several original works focused on Nantucket’s natural landscapes. Archival gallery listings (such as her 1984 signed landscape, “Squam Pond, Nantucket”) show her mastery of pastels. She is known for utilizing expressive cross-hatching, rhythmic, layered strokes, and stippled mark-making to build texture and depth. Her coastal palettes traditionally lean into soft blues, sea-greens, pale yellows, and warm corals to reflect the movement of island waters.
  • International Influence: While her pastel work captures the serenity of New England, her portfolio also features a heavy international influence, specifically centered on Southeast Asia. Jones has created a continuing series of artworks themed around Thailand. A prime example of this era of her work is “Chiang Mai Flower Market” (2002), which is proudly held in the Permanent Collection of the Artists Association of Nantucket.

Community Ties and Personal Life Beyond her work in the studio, Jones has been deeply involved in Nantucket’s cultural and commercial life. She was an early employee of Nantucket Bookworks, the island’s beloved independent bookstore, further cementing her ties to the local literary and creative communities.

While she maintains a relatively private personal life, she comes from a large family with creative roots (her late brother Steve was involved in the 1960s underground arts and music scene). She currently resides on Nantucket alongside her sister, Judith Cary Jones.

Today, Robin Jones is recognized as an authentic, established voice in Nantucket’s creative history, with her works circulating through private collections, coastal art auctions, and the AAN’s archives.
